DOWNTOWN GLENDALE - A weeklong series begins Sunday, dedicated to the research of historical Armenian monuments outside of Armenia and the people who have collected documentation on them.
The Glendale branch of the nonprofit Research on Armenian Architecture is conducting the series, featuring the organization's founder Armen Haghnazarian of Germany and the Armenia branch President Samvel Samvel Karapetian. Also conducting presentations will be Seroj Melik-Hosepians of France.
A culminating gala will be presented in honor of Karapetian because of his 25 years in the field, said Harutiun Surmenian, a board member of the Glendale branch.
Karapetian conducted his scientific expeditions in Soviet Georgia and Azerbaijan in the late 1970s, despite the watchful eye of the Soviet regime, Surmenian said.
"He has achieved a lot. Four of his books have already been published, one in three languages - English, Armenian and Russian," he said.
The purpose of the group, Surmenian said, is to research, study and electronically preserve Armenian architectural monuments outside of Armenia.
Over the past three decades, more than 100 scientific expeditions have been conducted in the regions outside of Armenia.
More than 160,000 items were collected, including photographs, slides, as-built plans, maps, surveys and other types of written and material documents.
